Purpose of this notice
The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is committed to protecting your privacy. This notice explains our general privacy practices and how we handle your personal data. We may provide more specific notices on forms or other webpages where we collect your data.
What we collect and why
We only collect personal data as allowed by law and to fulfill our core mission of managing Utah’s natural resources. We may collect information from you when you visit our website, apply for a landscape incentive, or interact with us for a particular service. If you choose not to provide the personal information, you may not be able to receive the applicable services.
We manage our data per the record series detailed here, which specifically include the following series containing personal information:
Depending on the service you’re using, personal Information collected by the division may include:
- First and last name
- Mailing address
- Property owners name & address
- Email address
- DOB
- Phone number
- Copy of water bill
- Agreements
Website tracking data
We use tracking technology to improve your experience and to help us understand how people use our site.
Google Analytics 4 (GA4) is used to analyze website traffic, troubleshoot technical issues, and enhance our service. GA4 does not collect personally identifiable information (PII). You control the data your browser shares through your browser privacy settings Google Account’s “Data & Privacy” settings. Analytics data is handled in accordance with record series 30837.
Website visitors may choose to share survey feedback in short (even one-question) surveys as part of the Customer Experience initiative. When you choose to respond, the information you submit is recorded with select browsing information, including, for example, the page you were on, the pages you had visited before submitting, and the browser and device you were using. Non-PII data is handled in accordance with record series 30837.
Some customers choose to submit personal information when requesting support through a survey. Any personally identifiable information collected in this form or survey is handled per record series 30838
Protection of personal data
We work hard to protect your personal data through technical and administrative safeguards. Our employees are trained on privacy and security policies, and we require our service providers to protect your data. If a data breach occurs, we will notify you as required by law.
We do not sell or purchase personal data.
Sharing personal data
We only share personal data when allowed by law. We may share data with other government agencies or service providers. We may also share data if legally required to do so.
Your privacy rights
Under Utah law, you have the right to:
- Request access to records that contain your personal data.
- Request a correction if our records contain inaccurate personal data.
- File a privacy complaint. Prior to filing an official complaint with the state Data Privacy Ombudsperson, you must first file a complaint internally with the division by contacting Shannon Clough by emailing sclough@utah.gov. If the issue is not resolved at the division level, you may then escalate it and file a complaint with the Data Privacy Ombudsperson at privacyombudsperson@utah.gov.
- If you are an At-Risk Government Employee as defined in Utah Code 63G-2-303(1), please request the Division’s “At-Risk Government Employee” form by emailing sclough@utah.gov. We will send you the application by email.
