West Colorado River Watershed Council
Our mission: To protect and preserve valuable water resources in the West Colorado River Watershed by:
- Providing a forum for discussion, collaboration and coordination among as many water interests as possible throughout the watershed, and
- Advising the Utah Watersheds Council on important watershed issues, ensuring local interests are well represented in state water planning and policy making.
Council objectives:
- Engage in the Colorado River Basin’s water supply management and demand imbalance; help local water users navigate and mitigate future impacts from water user regulation.
- Help local agriculture increase sustainability and productivity through more efficient water use.
- Increase local collaboration with the U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management to improve forest management, reduce wildfire risks and impacts, and improve water quality and quantity.
- Support and/or implement projects within the watershed by seeking funding and coordinating with local, state, federal, and nonprofit partners.
- Mitigate and adapt to the impacts of changing climate conditions by seeking out information and innovation from as many sources as possible.
- Engage in the development and implementation of the State Water Plan to ensure local priorities are represented and communicated to state agencies and law makers.
The West Colorado River Watershed Council is one of 12 local watershed councils that operate in Utah.
Purpose
Local watershed councils are created to encourage and facilitate discussion and collaboration or water-related issues and concerns among the stakeholders within the watershed. As feasible, the watershed council will facilitate communication and coordination among the following interests:
- Agriculture
- Industry
- Utah tribal nations
- Public water suppliers
- Water planning and research institutions
- Water quality
- Fish and wildlife
- Water dependent habitat and environments
- Watershed management
- Mutual irrigation companies
- Local sponsors of reclamation projects
Each local watershed council will designate one representative to serve on the Utah Watersheds Council, where issues of concern can be brought to the attention of the Legislature and governor.
