Great Salt Lake Watershed Council

Welcome to the Great Salt Lake Watershed Council page!

The Great Salt Lake Watershed Council is one of Utah’s 12 local watershed councils.

Current Status

The Great Salt Lake Advisory Council, which has filled a similar role to a watershed council since its formation in 2010, acts as the current Great Salt Lake Watershed Council. Liaisons from the Bear River, Weber River, Jordan River, Utah Lake and West Desert watershed councils are now involved.

The Great Salt Lake Watershed Council encompasses each of the five watersheds that drain into Great Salt Lake:

Each of these five councils have a representative who liaises with the Great Salt Lake Advisory Council, which will serve as a collaborative forum for all parties interested in securing a reliable and resilient source of water for Great Salt Lake.

Great Salt Lake Coordination and Councils

Great Salt Lake’s management is complex and involves many government agencies, non-profits, academic institutions, industries and the public. Each entity and project has its own mission, tasks or directives. They all work together to protect the lake.

The Great Salt Lake Advisory Council has been tasked with acting as the Great Salt Lake Watershed Council. In addition to better enabling coordinating and discussion across varied stakeholder interest groups, the advisory council directly advises the governor and departments of Natural Resources and Environmental Quality and reports annually to the Natural Resources Appropriations Subcommittee on sustainable use, protection and development of the lake.
